Video Task- Mockumentary

Mockumentary:

What we did

For our mockumentary task we filmed four girls in a school environment. The two blond girls (Stephanie and Britney) who walk together are the "popular" ones, and the other two (Cece and Leonore), Cece is obsessed with the Stephanie. We portrayed this through short interviews, zoom-ins, making the use of hand held camera obvious, behind the scenes and making the crew visible, eg holding mics (we used a lamp for this, we also used headsets). We also tried to edit it as least as possible, even exagerate it. As we can see in the end, Stephanie interacts with the "crew" member holding the mic as she bumbs the mic to my head (this is something we wouldn't see i a documentary). We left the original length of the video to make it akward and uncomfortable for the audience to watch. We also included zoom-ins in the interviews which is not conventional to a regural documentary.

When we see Cece running behind us, we used pan movements, zoom-ins, long shots to make the shot long and continuous.

What I learnt

From this task, I learnt how to exaggerate and play with documentary conventions. I learnt how to edit in Adobe Prime Pro, and how documentary work in general. I have always liked watching crime documentaries but I never learnt about the small things that make it a documentary, and how changing something slightly it becomes into a mockumentary. Making a shot longer or making the camera a bit more shaky than usual, it can make a big difference.
